Karishma kapoor was born on June 25, 1974 to Randhir Kapoor, an actor
popular during the 1970s and 80s, and actress Babita. Her sister is actress
Kareena Kapoor. She studied at the Cathedral and John Connon School in
Mumbai until grade six. Her grandfather is actor Raj Kapoor, might be in the
shade of a venerated family tree and 'Kapoor' might be the best brand name
in the industry, but there is more to Karisma Kapoor's success than just
genes. Karishma have several Nicknames . But Lolo is the most common one.
Relatives on her mother's side call her Lolima. Some call her Lola. Actually
all the distortions of Lolo are her nicknames.
After the initial unpleasantness and objections from her family, the
industry was stunned to see a Kapoor girl in front of the camera. And with
her entry, the myth that daughters of 'respectable' movie families didn't
enter the field was shattered. "The biggest tussle between me and my mother
happened when she refused to let me join films," she reminicises. "She gave
me the usual spiel about how "this place is not for you, you don't know what
kind of people there are there, they'll exploit you" and blah blah blah. But
I was adamant."
Babita, on the other hand, had other dreams for her darling daughter. She
wanted Karisma to go to some finishing and grooming school in Switzerland,
mingle with the lah-di-dah crowd and settle abroad. "But I am not that kind.
I want to be in my country, among my people. I want to be a part of the
middle-class culture and experience what their life is all about." That is
why she travelled by train in second-class compartments when she went to
college. "I wanted to meet different people, learn how they talked and know
what their views were." Besides, Karisma admits, she wanted to join films
because she is proud of her family's contribution to Indian cinema and
wanted to do something for herself, too. She was initially signed by
Dharmendra to star opposite his son, Bobby Deol. But when she found the film
was taking too long to start, she made her exit.
Karishma love dancing and that's what she do whenever she is free. karishma
put on the music in her room and dance till she fall down! Karishma’s mother
often screams from outside asking her to open the door.
Karisma made her debut in the 1991 movie Prem Qaidi and has since then
acted in more than sixty-five movies.
She had her first hit with the film Anari (1993) and followed up with an
appearance in a cult-favorite comedy, Andaz apna apna (1994). Karisma played
the female lead in Raja Hindustani (1996) also starring Aamir Khan.
she won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award and the National Film
Award for Best Supporting Actress for Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) also starring
Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. Karishma also perform in Zubeidaa
(2001),Fiza (2000). Her performance in Shakti: The Power (2002) was highly
appreciated. The actress has appeared opposite Govinda in many films. The
most popular of these have been Raja Babu (1994), Dulaara (1994), Coolie No.
1 (1995), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Hero No. 1 (1997) and Haseena Maan
Jaayegi (1999).
She temporarily left the industry after her marriage. Her movie Mere Jeevan
Saathi was released in 2006, and marked her comeback.
On 29 September 2003, she married industrialist Sanjay Kapoor, CEO of Sixt
India, according to hindu marriage rites . The couple has one daughter named
Samaira, who was born on 11 March 2005. They have had some widely publicized
marital problems, but have since reconciled.
Prior to her marriage to Sanjay Kapoor, she was engaged to Abhishek
Bachchan, the scion of the Bachchan family. They met on the sets of Refugee
in 1999 when Karisma was helping out her younger sister, Kareena with her
debut film. The couple also worked in the movie Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya
(2002).
