BIOGRAPHY – DEV ANAND

Dev Sahab

The Legendary personality Dev Anand was born in 1923 in Gurdaspur. Died 3 December 2011 in UK. born in successful lawyer family of Devdutt Pishorimal.  After completing his early education he went to Lahore to do his graduation at the famous Government College. During those days Government College of Lahore was the well-known educational institution in North India and was a zone of attraction to all the new talents across the country. His elder brother Chetan was already a prominent member of left leaning Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA). After completion of his graduation in English literature from Lahore he came to Bombay to join Chetan. Bombay in those days was very rarely visited place, although the film industry was experiencing great complication.

Dev Anand suffered few years of hardship. He worked for a short while in the Military Censor's Office, reading soldiers' letters to their families. He got his first break in the film “HUM EK HAIN” which was the Prabhat studio's production. His first salary was Rs. 350 which was a lot at that time. Out of that money, he used to send Rs 60 to his sister who was studying in Lahore. My first break was in a film on Hindu-Muslim unity, Hum Ek Hain. Dev Anand met Rehman on the sets of HUM EK HAIN as Rehman played the Muslim and Dev Anand played the Hindu. It was appreciated by the people and did above-average business. The best thing which happened to Dev Anand at Prabhat was that he met Guru Dutt Padukone. At that time Gurudutt was only choreographer employed full time by Prabhat. Dev remembers “I met Guru Dutt at Prabhat. We shared a common dhobi who gave my clean shirts to Guru Dutt by mistake and gave me his.

Guru Dutt was working with Bedekar and had a very small role in Hum Ek Hain. Guru Dutt and Dev Anand became great pals and promised each other other that if he got a chance to direct, then he'd cast me in the leading role, and if I got a chance to produce then Guru Dutt would direct the picture.” Not more achieving in the few years in Poona Dev Anand decided to return to Bombay where the life was waiting for him to twist. his brother Chetan Anand who was former teacher and a writer had made his way to the film making. His first film Neecha Nagar was a serious issue of slum dwellers protesting against the toxic waste being dumped in their colony and the behaviour of corrupt municipal officers. It was really a bold effort put forth  by Chetan and his film a won a prize at the Cannes film Festival. After Dev Anand shift to Bombay he met one of the leading singer and heroine of Bombay, Suraiya. Dev Anand and Suraiya's first film together was Jeet. But the film didn't do too well at the Box –office. They fell passionately in love with each other, while Suraiya mother approved for the marriage ,but her grandmother didn’t. Pressurized on all sides Suraiya decided to break with him. Dev Anand went home and cried on brother Chetan's shoulders. Now the time took a turned and success was on the doorstep of Dev Anand’s he was starred in the lead role in Bombay Talkies' Ziddi opposite Kamini Kaushal. The film was a success and rooted Dev Anand as one of the leading heroes of Bombay.
